The Annual Choral Music Festival and the House of Worship Choir Director, Van Gilmer, were among the top ten most popular topics featured in the weblog Ageless Northshore in the year 2009. The Third Annual Choral Festival was first brought to the attention of the author via the Pioneer Press. Then, as the author said, “[they] were blown away.” This first post, “Sights Seen and Heard: Baha’i Choral Music Festival,” appeared on May 28th, 2009.
According to Ageless Northshore’s visit count, that article was the first most popular article featured in 2009. The other two articles that cracked the top ten were “Van Gilmer – The Harmonious Voice of Diversity” (third) and the announcement of the release of the Third Choral Festival CD entitled “Sacred Songs III” (seventh).
We look forward to sharing more with them in 2010 at the Fourth Annual Choral Festival!

I’ve sung with the Baha’i House of Worship choir off and on since about 1987. We have other members that recently celebrated 35 years. With the birth of the annual choir festival in 2007, thanks to Cookie and Van Gilmer, the House of Worship has been filled with this ground breaking worship of singers and local listeners. It’s very special when the whole temple is filled. The Baha’is House of Worship was built over a time of great American peril…two World Wars and the Great Depression. It took fifty years to build from it’s conception in 1903 when the land was chosen. A labor of love. Being that it is 57 years old this year and that is also my age I feel a special kinship with this mother temple of North America. That means it is the first Baha’i House of Worship built on this continent. I feel so honored to be able to sing again this coming Memorial Weekend. We’re getting excited to see what songs Van is being led to select and I anticipate that singers will make an effort to learn them before making their way to the first rehearsal, the Thursday before the concert. Last year we had to memorize 13 songs. Singing in the true Gospel style, we sing with no music in our hands so that we sing with our hearts and souls. We sing with the words transforming in our minds so that their meaning can be felt and we can make a spiritual connection with the audience. For those who would like an appetizer of what the amazing acoustics of such a wonderous place can offer, come hear a visiting choir from Yale University this Sunday, March 7. Devotions start at 12:30 midday and then they will also give a concert in a more intimate setting afterwards, in the Foundation Hall found downstairs in the present visitors center. I can’t wait to be able to listen to another choir that will surely be awesome. They are an a cappella choir so their harmonies will be so clear and the vibrations will probably send shrills down our spines. A truely soul stirring experience. Well, hoping to see and meet many of you sometime in the near future. I’m hoping that we will have so many attend the festival this year that next year we will need to give three concerts, instead of just two. Sincerely, Anna
